Poker Tips – How to Keep a Cool Head

Poker is a game of skill, and the best players have an understanding of how to play their hands. They also know when to fold and when to raise their bets.

One of the most important poker tips is to keep a cool head, regardless of how many chips you have in your stack. It can be very stressful, and it is easy to lose focus and get frustrated when things are not going your way.

In poker, there are four basic types of hands: number cards, jacks, queens, and kings (called face cards or “pictures”); and aces. The ranking of these hands is determined by their odds (probability), not by their suit.

Ranks of Standard Hands

A straight, flush, and full house are the highest standard poker hands. A straight wins if it contains five consecutive cards, a flush beats any flush, and a full house wins if it contains three of a kind and a pair.

Trashy Holdings Are Good Bets

Most new poker players feel timid about playing trashy hands, especially when they have a lot of chips. But trashy hands are actually very strong if they hit the flop.

Watch for Tells

One of the most important poker tips is to read other players. You can do this by watching how they bet pre-flop, what they call/limp, and what they raise on the flop. You can also watch for their betting patterns and see if they are becoming aggressive or more conservative.
