Basically, poker is a card game where players attempt to make the best hand possible from a set of five cards. The player with the best hand wins the pot. It is usually played by a group of people around a circular or oval table. Typically, a player uses green or red poker chips.
Poker can be played by any number of players, though the ideal number is six or eight. In order to bet, a player must place a certain amount of chips in the pot. Each player may choose to check or raise.
The dealer begins by shuffling the cards. The cards are then dealt to players one at a time. Usually, players may choose to use up to three cards from their hand. In some games, the ace may be treated as the lowest card.
The first round of betting involves only the simplest of bets. The ante is usually a small bet, usually between $1 and $5. The player with the highest ranking poker combination wins the pot.
The best hand is considered a five card straight, or five cards in sequential order. The best hand is also the best hand to beat. A pair of aces beats a pair of queens, while a pair of kings beats a pair of jacks.
A “backdoor flush” is achieved by hitting needed cards on the turn and river. The ace of spades is a “wonder card” and is also considered a “wow card” in some games.
