The Basics of Poker

Poker

Poker is a card game played by two or more people with cards and money (chips) to bet. It is not a simple game and there is a lot of psychology and strategy involved.

In a poker game, each player starts with two personal cards. These are known as your “hand.” Five community cards are then dealt. You aim to make the best five-card hand from your own personal cards and the community cards. A round of betting then takes place. If you have a strong hand, you can bet and win the pot without showing your cards.

Players say “call” if they want to bet the same amount as the person who went before them. This is done by placing chips into the pot equal to that amount. A player can also raise a bet, which is done by placing more chips into the pot than the previous player did.

If you don’t have a good hand, you can fold. This means that you don’t call any more bets and leave the table. You can return and watch the next hand when it’s your turn.

At the start of each hand, one player has the dealer button. The person to their left acts first, and the action goes clockwise from there. At the end of each betting interval, a player who has not folded must put chips into the pot at least equal to the total contribution from the players to his or her right.
