One of the biggest mistakes inexperienced and losing players make is playing too many junk hands. This is understandable because folding over and over doesn’t make for a lot of fun. But it’s important to realize that most of your opponents are going to play crappy hands too. The best way to beat them is to bet and not fold. Observe your opponents to see how they play and learn their patterns. This is called “reading” the player and it’s the cornerstone of a successful poker game.

After the first betting round is complete the dealer puts three cards on the table that everyone can use. This is known as the flop. A fourth community card is then dealt which is called the turn and another betting round takes place. After this the fifth and final community card is revealed which is called the river. Players must then decide if they want to continue to the Showdown by having the best 5 card poker hand.
